Photo by Lamont Lenar The Saginaw Sugar Beets won its first playoff series, taking the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League North Division.

The Sugar Beets first faced off against the Lima Locos in a single game wildcard matchup, with Saginaw taking the 10-9 win on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

The Locos took an early 3-1 lead, but Saginaw came back with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and two in the sixth to go ahead 8-3.

Lima scored one run in the sixth, with the Sugar Bets posting two in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 10-4. The Locos made one final surge with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, to pull within one, 10-9. Saginaw then closed out the final two innings without allowing a run for the win.

The Sugar Beets then began a threegame series against the St. Clair Green Giants, the top regular season North Division team.

Saginaw won the opening game of the series 3-2 on Thursday, Aug. 2.

St. Clair scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams each were held scoreless until the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Adam Proctor homered to tie the game, 1-1, for the Sugar Beets.

The Giants came back in the bottom of the inning with a run to pull ahead 2-1.

Saginaw took the lead and the win in the ninth on a two-RBI double from Max Trucks for the 3-2 win.

St. Clair came back to take game two on Friday, Aug. 3. The Giants grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first.

The Sugar Beets tied up the game in the sixth. Connor Charping hit a double to drive in Ryan Robinette to tie the game, 1-1.

Ryan Missal gave Saginaw a brief 2-1 lead in the eighth, with Missal scoring on a sacrifice fly from Cooper Marshall. St. Clair then came back with three runs in the ninth for the 4-2 win.

In the series finale on Saturday, Aug. 4, Saginaw scored one run in the top of the first, on a home run by Marshall.

The Giants came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning, two in the second and one in the third for an 8-1 advantage.

The Sugar Beets came back with seven runs in the fifth to tie the game 8-8. Gaosh Williams doubled, sending Ryan Robinette home for the first run of the inning.

Daniel Page drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Cooper Marshall, followed by Jacob Crum with a two-RBI double scoring Williams and Charping. Crum then came up and cleared the bases with a three-run homer.

The Giants scored their final run of the game in the sixth, to take a 9-8 lead.

Saginaw tied the score 9-9 in the seventh, on an RBI single from Noah Marcoux, scoring Crum, and took the win in the eighth with Robinette taking home on a wild pitch for the 10-9 win.

The Sugar Beets moved on to face the Great Lakes South division series winner, the Ohio Copperheads, on Sunday, Aug. 5 with the Copperheads winning the first game of the three game series 7-2.
