The Michigan high school football season kicked off with the beginning of practice on Monday, Aug. 6.

Valley Lutheran began practice Monday morning with new coach Joe Willey at the helm. Coach Willey comes to the Chargers after having spent the last three years as head coach at Heritage.

Getting on the field to prepare for the season, Coach Willey said, “You want to play football. After all the off season conditioning and training the players have done, they just want to get out there.”

The Chargers begin the season with 22 players on the varsity squad. Coach Willey said the team will look to spread that ball out and put athletes in space so they can make plays.

With a limited number of players, each one is going to have to learn multiple roles, and the team will need to manage the clock to help keep the players fresh.

The Chargers finished last season at 1-8, and face six teams this season that were playoff teams last year, with two of them making it to the state finals.

Coach Willey said, “It’s a tough schedule, but we get to play the best and see where we fall.”

Coach Willey wants to provide a quality football experience for the players and wants the “community to see a program that it can be proud of.” He expects the team to have a hard-nosed disciplined approach to compete week in and week out.

Valley Lutheran begins the season at Carrolton on Aug. 24, then travels to St. Louis on Aug. 30, Ithaca at home on Sept. 7, St. Charles at home on Sept. 14, at Pinconning on Sept. 21, Michigan Lutheran Seminary at home on Sept. 28, at Nouvel on Oct. 5, at Hemlock on Oct. 12, and faces Coleman at home to close out the season on Oct. 19.
