The Spirit of the Township Award recognizes businesses that contribute to the sense of community, progressive culture and exceptional business climate of Saginaw Township.

STBA President, Julie Tacktor stated in the announcement that the Township View was awarded The Spirit of the Township award “based on commitment to the area, positive influence and support of the STBA and local businesses alike.”

The Township View made its debut in Saginaw and Thomas Townships in March of 2012 and is among 15 newspaper titles that comprise the VIEW Newspaper Group. The Township View reaches over 20,000 households in Saginaw and Thomas Townships each Thursday free of charge, providing a locally created, locally connected community newspaper to area residents. The Township View is located at the corner of Gratiot and Midland roads within “The Point”, which formerly housed the Saginaw ISD.

The Township View covers Heritage, Nouvel Catholic Central, Valley Lutheran and Swan Valley High School sports and general local educational news at all grade levels. Reporters also actively cover Saginaw and Thomas Township governmental meetings and related events, along with area-wide entertainment and cultural happenings.

In addition to regular advertising, the Township View also offers community announcements such as weddings and engagements, anniversaries, milestone birthdays, multiple generations, college graduation notices, professional promotions and birth notices at low, or no, cost to residents within their circulation area.

“We are honored to receive the Spirit of the Township award,” General Manager, Jane Vanderpoel said. “Our recent survey, conducted by the independent, third party auditing firm, Circulation Verification Council, has certified that 72.5 percent of the households in Saginaw and Thomas Townships have at least one resident that regularly reads the Township View. Having such a large weekly audience is affirmation that we are doing something right, but it is also a big responsibility to make sure that we live up to the expectation of our readers and advertisers,” Vanderpoel said, adding, “It is our advertising partners that make publication of the Township View possible. Without their support, there would be no Township View. If you appreciate your free community newspaper, we encourage you to thank our advertisers with your patronage and shop local.”

To be considered for the STBA “Spirit of the Township” award, STBA members may self-nominate or a nomination can be made by others for a business that exemplifies the spirit of the township. Awardees are presented with a plaque of recognition and will be featured in upcoming editions of the Township View.

An electronic nomination form can be obtained by contacting maryloufeldotte@charter.net. Forms are also available on the STBA website, by clicking on the “newsletter” link.
