Police capture Kay Jewelers ring thieves

By Mandilee Hecht

A robbery at Kay Jewelers store in the Fashion Square Mall last Monday, Oct. 22 resulted in four suspects being captured after a lengthy police chase that included driving through a cornfield and parts of Zilwaukee Township.

Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl said on Monday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. three males entered the Fashion Square jewelry store, 4787 Bay Road, and inquired about the location of its diamond rings.

“As the clerk was about to show the rings, one of suspects pulled out a hammer type instrument and began pounding on the glass. Eventually, the suspects were able to enter the display case and remove rings from the case,” a press release from the department stated.

The three suspects fled the store and exited out of the main mall entrance.

They were observed by witnesses entering a purple minivan and driving south through the parking lot.

Saginaw Township Police officers, Saginaw County Sheriff deputies and Michigan State Police troopers began a search for the vehicle. It was spotted by a Saginaw Township Police officer driving east on Schust Road.

“The officer attempted to pull the mini-van over, however the driver chose to flee from the officer. The suspect drove to the dead end of Schust Dr. and then entered a corn field. The suspect drove through the cornfield with the officer following and then temporarily stopped. Two suspects fled on foot while the driver sped away,” the release said.

After being chased on foot by officers, the two suspects who fled were taken into custody. One suspect was arrested by a Saginaw Township officer. The other suspect who fled on foot was arrested by a Carrollton Township officer.

Still fleeing from officers, the driver headed west on Schust, and then fled into Zilwaukee Township, being followed by the Saginaw Township officer and a Saginaw County Sheriff deputy.

Eventually, the suspect’s both front tires were deflated after driving over a set of Stop Stiks, which had been placed in the road by a Saginaw Valley State University officer.

“The suspect continued to Sherman and Kochville roads where his vehicle finally stopped. The suspect driver and a teenage passenger were taken into custody. Evidence was recovered from the van which linked the suspects to the jewelry theft,” police said.

The incident is still under active investigation by Saginaw Township Police officers and detectives. It is believed all four suspects are from the southeastern Michigan area.

The Saginaw Township Police Department also noted its appreciation for the multiple law enforcement agencies from Saginaw County that assisted with the apprehension of the felony suspects.
